Tag hadn't texted her back the rest of the day. After the way she'd treated him, maybe he didn't want anything to do with her anymore. Maybe he just needed some space. Marceline tried not to think about it. Joe had picked up on her gloominess at work and kept his distance.
How was she supposed to keep anyone safe when she hardly knew herself what she was capable of? She wished she could learn something, anything, to help protect her friends. She was desperate to the point she wished her mom would call. If Marceline had her number to dial, she would have. After work, she returned to the McCormick Estate. If Amina couldn't help Marceline figure out how to dispel spirits in Catori, Marceline knew she was going to have to try something else to stop Kendra. Marceline wanted to practice on Rush first.
Walking into the dark estate, Marceline called out, "Rush?"
Russel was waiting for her on the couch. He offered her a smile. "Amina's not here."
"Good, because I'm here for you," Marceline said.
Rush raised his eyebrows. "To what do I owe the pleasure?"
"I have a spell I want to try." Marceline set the heavy spell book on the altar. Rush opened his mouth, but Marceline held a hand up to silence him. "Just one little spell. I want to make sure it works in case I need to try it on Kendra."
"Amina wouldn't want you practicing and wasting your magic. She's going to figure out how to dispel in Catori. Just be patient," Russel said.
Marceline sighed as she busied her hands, lighting the candles around the room. "It's not that I don't trust Amina will figure it out eventually, but I don't have time to wait, and I can't take any chances. The full moon is tomorrow. I have to have a backup."
Rush floated close to her. "I will help in any way I can."
Marceline gave him a small smile. "Thank you." She crouched down and flipped open the spell book, returning to the page she had bookmarked with an old photo booth strip of her and Tag she'd had on her bedside table.
"Who's that?" Rush asked. "If you don't mind me asking."
"That's Tag, my . . . ," Marceline trailed off, lightly running her fingers over the image. They'd taken it the summer before they started dating. She could still remember the feeling of Tag's arm hooking her around the waist and pulling her closer as she'd nervously sat next to him on the bench as far away as she could so as not to touch him. It had pleasantly surprised her in the first of the four pictures, her mouth in an opened 'O' while he smiled and stared right into her eyes. "He's my boyfriend."
"You look happy," Russel said.
Marceline looked down at the smiling, naïve girl in the photos. It was hard to believe that was only a few months ago. That girl with the big crush finally got the guy of her dreams, and here she was, throwing it all away.
